Clemson visit on the list for fast-rising, top-10 prospect

Four-star defensive end Eyabi Anoma is enjoying his recruiting process that took off so quickly, but he’s still getting used to it.

Playing his first season of high school football as a junior this year at St. Frances Academy in Baltimore, Md., Anoma became an instant hit and has gained national attention in recruiting after amassing 24 sacks and more than 60 tackles. In a span of a few months, he went from having a few small offers for basketball to being a top-10 football prospect in the country.

Anoma considered playing football at his previous school, Randallstown High in Randallstown, Md., but didn’t think he would get much out of the sport there. However, after transferring to St. Frances prior to this academic year, he decided to suit up and is certainly glad he did.

“I’m enjoying it. Who wouldn’t enjoy the process?” Anoma said during a recent interview with The Clemson Insider.”You go from like having a couple D-II schools, D-I schools for basketball, to being top 10 in the country. It happened so quick, but I feel as though there’s still a lot of room for improvement. In my mind, until I’m No. 1 in the country, I feel as though I still have a lot of room for improvement.”

Anoma has picked up offers from Clemson, Maryland, Michigan State, Penn State, Pittsburgh, South Carolina, Syracuse, Texas A&M, West Virginia and Wisconsin since late September. Clemson offered in mid-December.

The 6-foot-5, 225-pounder is still a raw talent but possesses attractive size, aggressiveness and explosiveness off the edge. He is rated as the No. 9 prospect in the ESPN Junior 300 rankings.

Anoma said he has heard from Clemson lately.

“They were just like they want me up there real bad and stay in contact, stuff like that,” Anoma said.

Anoma is eyeing visits to several schools right now, though he said it is subject to change.

“I plan on visiting Pitt, UCLA, of course Clemson, I might see South Carolina and Michigan State,” he said. “That’s for right now. It can always change up.”

As far as Clemson, it’s more a matter of when he will visit, not if.

“Clemson’s definitely on my list,” Anoma said. “I’m definitely going to visit.”

Anoma is interested in Clemson and wants to learn more about the school. He also wants to get a feel for how he would fit into the program’s plans if he came there.

“I just want to see the campus, the facilities. I want to see the inside,” Anoma said. “I want the coaches to tell me how the school is and stuff like that.”

What will be important to him when he makes a decision in the future?

“The biggest thing is playing time, what they have to offer, if they have a good law program, the dorm life and the food,” Anoma said.

Still very early in his recruiting process, Anoma is on the fast track to many more offers before his high school career is over. So, he isn’t in a rush to announce any leaders or schools that are standing out to him.

“In my mind, I’m very neutral,” Anoma said. “I’m more worried about the process. I’m still trying to get used to it. So, I don’t have any favorites. I don’t have any schools that are standing out right now that I’m thinking in particular.”

In addition to his top-10 ranking in the ESPN Junior 300, Anoma is rated by 247Sports as the No. 81 overall prospect in the 2018 class, the No. 4 weak-side defensive end and the No. 5 prospect in Maryland. Rivals rates him as the No. 189 overall prospect and the No. 9 prospect at his position.
