Multiple reports late Thursday said Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris was offered and accepted the head coaching position at SMU.
Morris told TCI he was focused on Saturday’s game with South Carolina.
The story was reported by several media outlets including The Football Scoop, Scout, NBC, CBS and the Dallas Morning
News sites.
Chip Brown, of Horns Digest, said on Twitter: “A high-level source told me OC Chad Morris agreed to a multi-year contract averaging more than $3 million a year.”
According to Brown the offer was extended two weeks ago but Morris was waiting to see if Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney would go to Florida.
Scout’s SMU site Pony Stampede had not confirmed the story but added some details about a potential agreement and a source who said it was a
done deal “unless he gets cold feet.”
SMU was looking for an offensive minded head coach to replace June Jones who resigned earlier this year.
The Clemson Insider reached out to several sources from Clemson and none of them could confirm the reports out of Dallas area. We also reached out to Morris himself by text and said, “Unreal, everyone thinks they know. Sorry completely focused on SC.”
Brown cited a source who told him SMU would announce Morris the first week of December.
We will continue to monitor the situation closely and we will let you know as we learn more.
