Stars and player rankings in the recruiting industry are subjective and only matter to a certain degree. There have been plenty of examples over the years of five-star prospects that didn’t pan out, or two- and three-star prospects that ended up being superstars no one saw coming (former two-star Hunter Renfrow and former three-star Vic Beasley are a couple prime examples of the latter).
Stars and rankings are assigned to recruits based on perceived potential, so it’s not a foolproof system. With that said, there are even more examples of highly touted recruits that become the impact players they were projected to, and there is a lot of data out there that supports the accuracy of the major recruiting services in evaluating talent.
The bottom line is that player ratings and rankings give fans a glimpse of what the future of their team could like. And for Clemson, based on those measures, the future looks very bright.
On Thursday, 247Sports released its up-to-date Top247 player rankings for the 2018 recruiting class, and Clemson is well represented.
All five of Clemson’s commitments are included in the rankings, with three ranked in the top 30.
Cartersville (Ga.) five-star quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who committed to Clemson in December, remains the No. 1-ranked prospect.
Two of Clemson’s in-state commits, Rock Hill (S.C.) South Pointe four-star receiver Derion Kendrick and Richburg (S.C.) Lewisville four-star defensive tackle Josh Belk, aren’t far behind.
Kendrick is ranked No. 20 overall, followed by Belk at No. 30. Kendrick is the second-ranked receiver and second-ranked prospect in South Carolina, while Belk is the third-ranked defensive tackle and third-ranked prospect in South Carolina.
Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy four-star linebacker Mike Jones, who became the first member of the class when he pledged last June, is ranked as the No. 142 prospect. Central (S.C.) Daniel four-star linebacker Jake Venables, who committed in December, is ranked No. 229.
There is a long way to go, but as it stands now, Clemson’s 2018 class ranks seventh in the country by 247 — and the Tigers are well positioned with many of their other targets in the Top247 rankings.
IMG Academy five-star defensive end Xavier Thomas, the No. 2 overall prospect, has named Clemson and South Carolina his finalists. Laurinburg (N.C.) Scotland County five-star running back Zamir White, the No. 3 overall prospect, regards Clemson as one of his leaders if not the leader outright.
Houston (Texas) Lamar five-star cornerback Anthony Cook, the No. 4 prospect, has expressed interest in Clemson and visited last July. Atlanta (Ga.) Pace Academy five-star offensive guard Jamaree Salyer, the No. 9 prospect, favors Clemson, Georgia and Ohio State among his nearly 30 offers. IMG Academy five-star defensive tackle Taron Vincent, the No. 19 prospect, named Clemson one of his leaders following his visit for the school’s Junior Day in January.
Four-star offensive tackle Richard Gouraige (No. 48) also attended Clemson’s Junior Day, as did four-star offensive guard Trey Hill (No. 58), four-star offensive tackle Nana Asiedu (No. 67), four-star defensive end Stephon Wynn (No. 69), four-star cornerback Kyler McMichael (No. 72), four-star safety Derrik Allen (No. 93), four-star tight end Mustapha Muhammad (No. 118), four-star wide receiver Jordyn Adams (No. 133) and four-star cornerback Tyson Campbell (No. 135).
Clemson is in good standing, too, with other priority targets such as Clemmons (N.C.) West Forsyth four-star defensive end K.J. Henry (No. 37) and Virginia Beach (Va.) Bishop Sullivan Catholic four-star linebacker Teradja Mitchell (No. 50).
Clemson’s 2018 class will be similar in size to its small 14-member 2017 class, but the Tigers are in position to fill their available spots with elite talent.
