After losing last year’s season opener to Maine, then catcher Chris Okey walked up to Seth Beer and the rest of his teammates and told them this does not define our team and this does not define who we are.

Following Friday’s 6-4 loss to Wright State in the 2017 season opener, Beer is now relaying that same message to this year’s team.

Last year’s squad took Okey’s advice and went on to win 44 games, an ACC Championship and hosted an NCAA Regional.

“It’s plain and simple, that is what it is,” Beer said. “Have you heard of an undefeated baseball team? Because I haven’t, and if you have please tell me because I would love to know who they are, but the thing is you just have to go out there. You are going to win some and you are going to lose some.

“It is those that get back up, after you fall, those are the true champions.”

Clemson (0-1) will get a chance to get back up on Saturday (2 p.m.) as it hosts Wright State in Game 2 of the three-game series. The Tigers will have All-American Pat Krall on the mound as they try to pick up their first win of the 2017 season.

Like Beer, head coach Monte Lee did not seem too concerned about the Tigers’ loss on Friday. He thought for the most part his team outpitched and outplayed Wright State, but he said the Raiders did something they did not. They took advantage of their opportunities to score, while Clemson three times left the bases loaded and other times failed to execute in key situations.

Clemson was 3-for-10 with runners in scoring position in Game 1.

“It is eerily similar to opening day last year,” Lee said. “We had more quality at-bats than our opponent. I thought we outpitched our opponent. But we have to give our opponent credit because when they had an opportunity to score a run, they found a way to score a run. That was the biggest difference.

“Situational hitting and hitting with runners in scoring position, I can assure you of this, we are not going to talk about it a lot. We are going to move on from it because the last thing I want to do is put pressure on my players. These guys give me everything that I ask from them. They work as hard as they can. They are selfless. They play together. I’m very proud of players and where we are at right now.”

Lee says the bottom line is they will come up with big hits with runners in scoring position, but they just did not do it on Friday.

“I know we will come out tomorrow ready to go and will keep putting together quality at-bats, playing good defense and one of these guys is going to step up and drill one with runners in scoring position and I think they will take a deep breath,” the Clemson coach said. “I think the nerves were there a little bit (with opening day) and they were jacked up a little bit just like all of us are. But I think overall, we played a really good game. We just have to do a little bit more in the short game and be in the right place at the right time in regards to backing up bases and the little things.

“We are going to be okay.”
