While Clemson was able to defeat Wright State on Saturday to tie up the series, the Raiders left Doug Kingsmore Stadium as the winners of the opening weekend after beating Clemson 9-2 on Sunday afternoon. Clemson head coach Monte Lee addressed the media following the loss with select players.
Here is what we heard:
While Clemson was not able to win the series against Wright State, Lee gave the credit to the Raiders for being ready to play and challenge the defending ACC Champions in their home ballpark.
“Wright State was a really good club. This wasn’t just some team that was going to roll in here and we rolled the balls out and beat them,” Lee said. “We knew that they were going to be a really good club. They won 46 games last year and played in the championship of a regional. They are a very tough, mentally tough, competitive team. I thought they came out and played that way. We knew it was going to be a challenge.”
Lee put the blame on himself for not being able to prepare his team to be ready to win the opening series. Regardless of the injuries and illnesses that riddled the team in their first debut of the new season, Lee said he will not use that as an excuse for the loss.
“We need to learn from this, and we need to try to move on into week two and be better. It just has to be accountability on everybody’s part. That is the bottom line,” Lee said. “I’m going to be accountable as the head coach. It falls on my shoulders. I have to do a better job of coaching, and I have to get our guys in a position to play better baseball.”
The Tigers (1-2) were only able to score off of two solo home runs hit by Seth Beer and Logan Davidson. Wright State’s starting Sunday pitcher, Danny Sexton, was credited with the win after throwing seven strikeouts and allowing one earned run in the 6.2 innings that he pitched. Lee claimed it was hard to prepare for his pitching style since Sexton did not play last season.
“It was tough to try to figure out a game plan because they had a lot of new guys,” Lee said. “We had no video, no scouting report on the guy that threw today because he was out last year. We really did not have a good feel for him at all. It was really trying to learn as the at bats went throughout the game.”
Beer said the team is going to take what they learned from the loss and address where they went wrong in practice before taking on Western Carolina on Wednesday.
“You know where your base is and now you work on your weaknesses that we need to work on,” the sophomore said. “We just take that into practice and we take that in the back of our mind going into the mid-week game. We practice those things.”
Freshman pitcher Jacob Hennessey threw four strikeouts in 1.2 innings in his second game as a Tiger and said that despite the loss, he still had a great time getting to play in his first weekend series.
“It was awesome. It was everything I thought it would be and even more,” Hennessey said. “I think I need to work on holding runners a little bit. I think that kind of showed a little this weekend, but other than that, I am going to keep my approach and keep doing what I am doing and be who I am.”
