Clemson has asserted a firm recruiting footprint in the state of Georgia in recent years.
Since 2014, Clemson has signed 18 players from Georgia, including eight rated as a four-star and three rated as a five-star by Rivals.com and/or 247Sports.
Clemson has also consistently landed players from Georgia that the University of Georgia wanted. Of the aforementioned 18 signees, 11 held offers from Georgia.
The Tigers are again after a number of coveted prospects from the Peach State in the 2018 class. Clemson has already landed Cartersville (Ga.) five-star quarterback Trevor Lawrence, the nation’s No. 1 2018 prospect, who committed to Clemson over Georgia in December.
According to 247, Clemson has offered 15 prospects from Georgia. By our count, Clemson is still targeting six of those prospects, with all of them Georgia targets as well.
So, the battle between Clemson and Georgia in this recruiting cycle is shaping up to be a good and entertaining one.
Here is a rundown of those prospects and where the Tigers stand right now:
Jamaree Salyer, OG, Atlanta, Ga. (Pace Academy): Georgia has long been viewed as the favorite for the nation’s No. 1 offensive guard, but Clemson is the Bulldogs’ biggest threat. He most recently visited Clemson for the school’s Junior Day on Jan. 28. His decision will probably come down to signing day.
Trey Hill, OG, Warner Robins, Ga. (Houston County): The nation’s No. 2 guard also attended Clemson’s Junior Day last month before making the two-hour trip to Georgia for its Junior Day last weekend. Clemson is in a similar position here, likely second on his list behind Georgia. Auburn, Florida, Florida State and Tennessee are others in the mix.
Kyler McMichael, CB, Norcross, Ga. (Greater Atlanta Christian): After being offered by the Tigers in December, McMichael made the trip for Clemson’s Junior Day, too. Clemson and Florida are the perceived teams to beat here. Georgia is contention among others such as Ohio State, which offered this month. The top-250 overall prospect by ESPN, Rivals and 247 plans to announce his top schools before his senior season begins.
Brenton Cox, DE, Stockbridge, Ga. (Stockbridge): The consensus top-150 overall prospect visited Clemson for the Louisville game in October and picked up an offer from Clemson at the end of the month. Georgia is generally regarded as his leader, though Clemson is in the conversation along with schools such as Alabama, Ohio State and Tennessee.
Justin Mascoll, DE, Snellville (Ga.) South Gwinnett: Clemson was first to offer Mascoll in 2014 before his freshman year. The top-100 overall prospect by ESPN and Rivals is thought to favor Florida State, with Clemson and Georgia trailing the Seminoles. He visited Clemson for the South Carolina game in November.
Myles Sims, CB, Atlanta, Ga. (Westlake): Sims, a former teammate of 2017 Clemson cornerback signee A.J. Terrell, was offered by the Tigers in May. Auburn, Georgia and Clemson are just a few schools in the running, as his recruitment is relatively open at this point. He visited Clemson in June and has expressed interest in getting back on campus.
