ACC Spring Preview: NC State

NC State is coming off of a 7-6 season, and like every team they’re looking to improve. The Wolfpack can go either way in 2017, but there fan base wants to see improvements after an up-and-down season a year ago out of Dave Doeren’s team.

Who they lost: The ‘Pack is not losing much with only five players leaving that are considered draftable, and only one as a junior. Although, they aren’t losing much in quantity, they are losing a few quality players. One such player is running back Matthew Dayes who ran the ball for 1,166 yards and 10 touchdowns, while averaging 4.7 yards a carry. They will also be losing junior safety Josh Jones, who left early for the NFL. Jones had three interceptions last season. He also led the team in tackles with 109.

Who is coming back: NC State has a ton of players returning, led by quarterback Ryan Finley, who threw the ball for more than 3,000 yards last season with 18 touchdowns. Finely will be the centerpiece of the offense, and his No. 1 target, tight end Jaylen Samuels, will also be back with him next season. He caught 55 passes last season, including seven touchdowns. Also returning next season is defensive tackle Bradley Chubb, who led the team in sacks last season with 10.5 sacks.

Recruiting class: State had one of the least impressive recruiting classes in the ACC, but it did sign 20 players to the 2017 class. The last signing of 6-foot-3 receiver Emeka Emezie was a huge pickup, possibly giving Finley a No. 1 target at wide receivers. Also defensive tackle Grant Gibson could make his presence felt early.

2017 Schedule: The Wolfpack has a solid schedule, and will be opening up with a tough game on Sept. 2nd against South Carolina. Another key game for them will be their final game of the season, against in North Carolina on Nov. 25th.

Projected finish: 7-6
