There’s a reason why Clemson is called ‘Wide Receiver U’

How many teams can lose two dynamic players like Clemson’s Mike Williams and Artavis Scott at wide receiver and not suffer much of a drop off?

Not too many.

However, let’s be honest. How many teams have recruited to the level Clemson has at wide receiver the last six years. There is a reason why Clemson is called “Wide Receiver U” and its impressive list of talented players will continue in 2017.

Not only do the Tigers have talent such as Deon Cain, Ray-Ray McCloud and Hunter Renfrow already on campus, but they also bring in the top wide receiver in the 2017 class in Tee Higgins, along with fellow Tennessee native Amari Rodgers, a four-star player who is considered the No. 2 wide receiver in the state of Tennessee.

Plus Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney has other guys already on campus such as Trevion Thompson, Cornell Powell, Diondre Overton and T.J. Chase, who will all battle for playing time in the fall as well. In other words, Clemson is loaded with talent at wide receiver.

“It will be exciting, especially when you put it all together,” Swinney said. “Cornell is going to be a great football player. Trevion has had an excellent spring. Renfrow … the Renfrow nation continues to grow. I’m proud of him. Diondre Overton, I’m proud of him. He is a young guy that has to mature physically, but it is good to see him make big plays out there. It is going to be a young group, especially when we add a couple of those young guys coming in.”

But it is a good group and it a group that is led by two playmakers who have already proven in their careers that they can take over a game if they want to.

In each of the last two years, Cain has been one of the Tigers’ best playmakers. He averaged 17.1 yards a catch and tallied five touchdowns as a freshman, while last year he averaged 19.1 and scored nine touchdowns. Cain’s catch-and-run in the national championship game against Alabama, a play that covered 43 yards, jumped started the Clemson offense in its 35-31 victory.

Then there is McCloud, who is perhaps one of the most electrifying players on the team when he is healthy. Last year McCloud had a 74-yard punt return as well as caught a career-high eight passes for a career-high 101 yards in Clemson’s win at Georgia Tech.

“I think they had great springs, both of them,” Swinney said. “I have been really pleased with how they have worked all spring.

“Deon, man he has been awesome all spring. The last scrimmage we had last Wednesday, he probably had the best game of anybody all spring. Ray-Ray made some plays and we saw some things from him in the running game and in the passing game. That’s what we need from him. We need him to be a playmaker for us. He has done that all spring.”
