2018 RB on Clemson: ‘I can see myself there’

One of the top running backs in North Carolina made his way to Clemson last weekend.

Sanford-Lee County class of 2018 prospect Jahmir Smith took up an invitation to visit for the Orange & White spring game on Saturday.

“It was my first time ever visiting Clemson, so everything I saw was amazing, and I like their new facility,” Smith told The Clemson Insider. “That was the first thing I saw when I got there. It was crazy because I had never seen anything like it.

“The visit was real nice. I really enjoyed talking with the coaches. The coaches were all cool, especially coach (Tony) Elliott and coach (Robbie) Caldwell.”

Smith also appreciated his first taste of the atmosphere in Death Valley.

“It was unique,” he said. “There was so many people at the spring game. It was a surprise. A really great fan base.”

Smith surpassed 20 offers last month, when California, Duke, Georgia Tech, Mississippi State, Nebraska, North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia all pulled the trigger. Notre Dame threw its hat in the ring last week, joining others such as N.C. State, Northwestern, Rutgers, Vanderbilt and Wisconsin on his offer sheet.

Smith said he hit it off with Clemson running backs coach Tony Elliott during the visit.

“He said he’s watched my film and done some research about me and stuff. He said he really likes me,” Smith said. “We’re real similar because he did engineering, so he’s real smart, and I’m smart too because I have a 4.4 GPA. And we just related on that.”

Elliott told Smith that he will see him during the spring evaluation period, which begins on Saturday and runs through May 31.

As a junior last season, Smith rushed for 2,130 yards and 41 touchdowns.

“I can burst through the hole,” Smith said of his strengths as a runner, “and coaches say I’m a one cut and go back.”

Smith said Mississippi State, Tennessee and Notre Dame are a few of the schools that want to get him on campus.

He visited Wisconsin in March and has tentative plans to visit Virginia Tech this weekend.

Should Clemson jump into contention with an offer, it would get heavy consideration from Smith after his experience over the weekend.

“Just the feel when I got there,” Smith said of what he likes the most about Clemson. “I can see myself there.”
