DeMarcco Hellams is rated as a wide receiver by the major recruiting services but being recruited as a defensive back by some schools, including Clemson.

The four-star prospect from Hyattsville (Md.) DeMatha Catholic was offered by Clemson in mid-February, attended the Tigers’ junior day on March 4 and has stayed in touch with co-DBs coach Mike Reed since.

“I talk to coach Reed probably every week or so,” Hellams said to TCI. “We talk about what playing for Clemson would have in store for me and we talk about more than football. We talk about how school is going, family and just life overall.”

Hellams (6-1, 195) visited Maryland a few days after Clemson and most recently traveled to Ann Arbor for Michigan’s spring game on Saturday.

He said he will likely return to Clemson for the Dabo Swinney Camp in June.

“When I get back down to Clemson I’m looking forward to hanging out with some of the players and being coached by coach Reed,” he said.

Hellams holds offers from Clemson, Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, North Carolina, Penn State, Tennessee, Virginia and Virginia Tech among others as a sophomore.

Offers will continue to come his way, but Clemson appears to be on firm footing as one of his top schools.

“Clemson is high,” he said. “It has always been one of my dream schools.”

Hellams is rated as a four-star by Rivals, Scout and 247Sports. 247 ranks him as the No. 3 prospect in Maryland, No. 35 receiver and No. 229 prospect in the 2019 class.
