Game 56: ACC Roundup

Saturday is the final day of the ACC baseball regular season. Despite losing the first two games of its series in Raleigh, Clemson still has a ton to play for in its finale. The Tigers begin the day in sixth place and could finish anywhere from fourth to seventh place in the overall standings depending on what happens at NC State and elsewhere around the league.

Here are all four potential outcomes for the Tigers heading into Saturday’s action:

Clemson finishes 4th:

–Win at NC State

–Virginia loss at Georgia Tech

Clemson finishes 5th:

–Win at NC State

–Virginia win at Georgia Tech

Clemson finishes 6th:

–Loss at NC State

–Miami loss vs Virginia Tech

Clemson finishes 7th:

–Loss at NC State

–Miami win vs Virginia Tech

There are essentially two alternate paths the Tigers’ season can take. If they win on Saturday, they are guaranteed at least the fifth seed in the final standings. Whether they finish fourth or fifth depends on Virginia since Clemson owns the tiebreaker over the Cavaliers.

If the Tigers lose to the Wolfpack, they could finish no higher than sixth in the league hierarchy. Finishing sixth or seventh then becomes dependent on Miami since the Hurricanes would either finish half a game ahead of or behind Clemson.

The bottom line is this: If you’re a Clemson fan, you’re also a Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech fan. Either of those teams picking up a win would bump the Tigers up one spot heading into next week’s ACC Tournament.

Here are the current standings, with all possible outcomes for each league team:

  1. Louisville—1st, 2nd
  2. North Carolina—1st, 2nd
  3. Wake Forest—3rd, 4th
  4. Virginia—3rd, 4th
