The quarterback position has largely been the heart and soul of the Clemson machine this decade. After Tajh Boyd bust onto the scene as one of Dabo Swinney’s first big recruits, Deshaun Watson took over and led the Tigers to their second National Championship last season.

Now with back-to-back 5-star quarterbacks in Hunter Johnson and Trevor Lawrence in 2018, the hype surrounding the quarterback position in Death Valley is still trending upward.

Clemson usually tries to grab at least one quarterback in every recruiting class, and it’s currently in the process of seeking out one for 2019.

Paul Tyson, the great-grandson of legendary Alabama head coach Paul “Bear” Bryant is one of the 2019 quarterbacks being looked at right now.

Tyson has not had time to take any visits recently, but plenty of teams stopped by his school’s spring practices to watch him play, including the spring game.

“It went great,” he said. “A lot of schools stopped by. Coach (Brandon) Streeter from Clemson stopped by also.”

Tyson said Streeter spoke with his coach while he was there.

“He talked to my coach…just that he liked me and wanted to make sure I was coming to camp,” said Tyson.

Tyson told The Clemson Insider he will be attending Clemson’s football camp in the beginning of June.

In addition to Clemson, he said he will attend camps at Texas A&M, Alabama, NC State, Kentucky, and a couple other schools.

Tyson also said his coach has been in frequent contact with Clemson defensive ends coach Todd Bates.

Seeing that it’s still early in his recruitment, Tyson is still waiting for several big offers, but said NC State, Wake Forest, Duke, Notre Dame, Clemson and Alabama are all heavily recruiting him right now.

The Hewitt-Trussville (Ala.) prospect does not currently have any favorites, but said that he really likes Clemson and can not wait to visit this summer.

“I love the facilities and coaching staff!” he said.

While Tyson does not have an offer from Clemson as of right now, he said that an offer from the National Champs would mean a lot to him.

“They are a big time program and the defending national champs. It would definitely be something special,” he said.

Tyson does not know when he will begin to narrow down his recruitment, but he does have a very straightforward and simple criteria for making his decision.

“I’m looking for whichever team is the best fit for me,” he said.
