Clemson head coach Monte Lee and the Tigers landed a big commitment Saturday from the top 2020 pitcher in South Carolina.

Irmo (S.C.) Dutch Fork right-handed rising sophomore Ty Olenchuk gave Lee the news on campus this morning.

“Coach Lee loved it,” Olenchuk told The Clemson Insider. “He took me on a visit today. It was cool, and then he was very excited to hear the news.”

Olenchuk was also garnering interest from Coastal Carolina, Florida, Furman and South Carolina.

He said Clemson offered him a scholarship about a month ago, and it was an offer he couldn’t refuse.

“To commit this early, it’s a big step, but there’s nowhere else I would want to play but Clemson,” Olenchuk said. “It’s my dream school. It’s where I’ve always wanted to play.”

Olenchuk said the Tigers like his fastball command and aggressive style on the mound.

He works with a three-pitch mix of a fastball, curveball and changeup. His fastball sits at 86-88 miles per hour and touches 90.

“They told me that they really like how I can locate my fastball and how I like to get ahead and I like to dominate people,” he said. “I’m not scared to go in, I’m not scared to throw a ball. I just try to dominate everybody that gets in the box, and that’s what they really like about me.”

Lee was a major factor in Olenchuk’s decision to pull the trigger early on his pledge to Clemson.

“The way that Monte Lee gets to know his players and the way he interacts with whoever he’s recruiting, it’s unbelievable,” Olenchuk said. “I don’t think there’s any coach I’d rather play for than Monte Lee.”
