Florida commit ‘cried tears of joy’ after Clemson offer

Largo (Fla.) 2019 defensive lineman Jaquaze Sorrells has been committed to Florida since last summer, but that didn’t damper his happiness upon learning of his newest offer from Clemson.

Defensive coordinator Brent Venables, who visited Sorrells during the spring evaluation period, informed him of the offer on Friday.

“First off I want to thank my lord and savior Jesus Christ because three years ago I wasn’t looking at a future like this, but I was very excited and happy,” Sorrells told The Clemson Insider. “I cried tears of joy on the phone when coach V told me I had the offer.”

Sorrells (6-3, 250) has other offers from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan, N.C. State, Oregon, Syracuse, USF, Tennessee and Virginia Tech.

A visit to Clemson this summer is in the works.

“I planned on visiting before the offer,” Sorrells said, “and I would like to learn everything (about the school). I’m open to know everything there is to know.”

From what he knows already, Sorrells said Clemson’s tradition and head coach Dabo Swinney stand out.

“I’ve done some research on Clemson but nothing deep,” he said. “As of what know off the top of my head, they’re a very traditional school, and I love the way coach Swinney brings that family vibe to everything he does. That’s the face of CU football, and it’s more than football with them and that’s what’s important.”

Florida was first to offer Sorrells on June 10, 2016, and he committed to the Gators the same day.

This week marks the one-year anniversary of his pledge. However, Sorrells said his recruitment remains open.

“Most definitely,” he said. “I have top SEC offers, Big Ten and ACC, so everything is open.”

What will be important to him him when he makes his final decision?

“A family, great environment and a great school overall,” he said. “It’s about academics first.”

Sorrells, who is listed as a defensive tackle by most of the major recruiting services, is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 185 overall prospect in the 2019 class.
