The Clemson Insider gives a scouting report on every player on Clemson’s summer depth chart. We will break down what the player does best, what he needs to work on, how he compares to other former players at his position and where he fits on the Clemson roster.

Player name: Chris Register (6-3,255)

Player position: Defensive end

Years left of eligibility: 2 years

Current rank on depth chart: Second team

Player productivity so far: Originally a linebacker for the Tigers, Register made the switch to defensive end after his redshirt freshman season in 2014. He has nine tackles and has played in 12 games during his career. All nine tackles came in 2016 when he played in 11 games. He also had 1.5 tackles for loss.

What player does best: Register is quick out of the gate. He has good speed and lateral movement. He knows how to find the football. He has the speed to quickly get around offensive tackles.

What player needs to work on: The coaches would like to see Register put on a little more weight and muscle mass as he continues to progress. They would like to see him get up to 260 pounds and keep it on.

Productivity of former Clemson players at the position:  
Daquan Bowers, 2008: He had 47 tackles as a true freshman, including eight tackles for loss and one sack. He also had three quarterback pressures.

Daquan Bowers, 2010: He finished second on the team with 74 tackles. He led the nation with 26 tackles for loss and with 15.5 sacks. He also had two more quarterback pressures. He was a unanimous First-Team All-American and won the Nagurski Award as the nation’s best defensive player.

Andre Branch, 2008: He played in just 8 games as a true freshman. He had 11 tackles and one tackle for loss.

Andre Branch, 2011: He finished second on the team with 85 tackles. He led the team with 17 tackles for loss and 10.5 sacks. He was a second-team all-American in 2011.

Shaq Lawson, 2013: He played in 13 games and tallied 35 tackles, including 10 for loss. He also had four sacks and 9 quarterback pressures.

Shaq Lawson, 2015: He finished fourth on the team with 88 tackles. He led the nation with 25.5 tackles for loss and was second in sacks with 12.5. He was a First-Team All-American.

What can you hope for? Depth has been an issue at defensive end the last two years, especially when it comes to experience. With the experience Register got at defensive end last year as a backup, plus getting a third spring under his belt at defensive end, you hope he provides the kind of quality depth the Tigers need there, especially with Richard Yeargin (neck) out for the year following his car accident earlier this month.

What is a realistic expectation? Register becomes a quality backup who sees his playing time increase as the year moves along.

What about the future? Register will provide the Tigers with depth this year, but next year, with the likely hood Clelin Ferrell and Austin Bryant might turn pro at the end of 2017, he will have an opportunity to compete for a starting job going into his senior year. This coming season is a big year for the redshirt junior to prove what he can do and possibly set himself up for 2018.
