Cartersville (Ga.) five-star quarterback Trevor Lawrence amazed on the national stage Saturday night, wowing viewers during a primetime game on the ESPN network.

The Clemson commitment made big play after big play as he completed 18 of 22 passes for 403 yards and four touchdowns, leading Cartersville to a 52-45 victory over Bartram Trail (St. Johns, Fla.).

The Clemson Insider was on hand for the contest as part of our Tour of Champions, and caught up with Cartersville head coach Joey King afterward.

“He played really good, made some really good decisions,” King said. “And then he’s there pulling for the defense and encouraging people, and that’s what good quarterbacks do, so we’re definitely tickled about him.”

Lawrence (6-6, 208) came out firing from the start and showed off his rifle of an arm all game. He delivered precise lasers in the pocket, launched accurate balls downfield on the run and made it look easy all the while.

While many people watching Lawrence on Saturday may have been surprised by just how good he was, his teammates and coaches weren’t.

Star performances are the norm for Lawrence, the nation’s top-ranked pocket passer.

“That’s about it,” King said. “He always steps up to the plate.”

In his first three seasons as Cartersville’s starting signal-caller, Lawrence amassed 10,405 yards passing and 118 touchdown passes. Former Clemson standout Deshaun Watson currently holds the Georgia high school state records in those categories, though Lawrence is poised to break them by the end of his senior season.

Lawrence is rightfully known for his arm talent, but he provided flashes of his sneaky good athleticism and made some plays with his legs against Bartram Trail, as well.

“He’s definitely athletic,” King said. “He’s not your typical pro-style quarterback. He makes a lot of plays for us with his feet and does a really good job in whatever we ask him to do.”

Though Lawrence is a generational-type talent and exhibited that Saturday, King said his skills as a player isn’t what impresses him the most.

“He’s a phenomenal player, but he’s an even better person, and that part makes him special,” King said. “As far as his skill set and his talent, it’s unbelievable. But as special as he is in that respect, he’s even better of a person.”

Rivals and Scout rank Lawrence as the No. 1 prospect in the 2018 class regardless of position.

Cartersville has won 32 consecutive games and two straight 4A state championships with Lawrence at the helm.
