Being one of No. 5 Clemson’s biggest downfield threats, wide receiver Deon Cain, shined for the Tigers in Saturday’s 56-3 victory over Kent State.

Cain had one touchdown for the defending national champions in their opener against the Golden Flashes, a 61-yard bomb from quarterback Kelly Bryant.

After the game, Cain spoke with the media about the offense, Bryant and his touchdown. The Tigers totaled 665 yards in the win, while Bryant completed 16-of-22 passes for 236 yards. He also ran seven times for 77 yards and scored on an 8-yard run.

Question: How good was it that the offense started off the way you did?

Cain: “It was great. There was really no drop off between the first group and the second group. Everyone that was in was playing comfortable and fast and everything. So, at the end of the day, I was just proud of everyone and we just kept the momentum going throughout the game.”

Question: How important was it to set the tone quickly?

Cain: “Really so everybody can get that confidence. Once everybody got that confidence after the first play and that second play, then we just rolled after that. We are that offense that once we get rolling, we are unstoppable.”

Question: A lot of people ask a lot of questions about your offense with all of the guys who had left. How eager were you to show them that this offense had not missed a step?

Cain: “Very eager. Our offense is just very misunderstood and we just want to come out and prove a lot of people wrong, and we did. We just have to keep on rolling from now on. We had a great day just to set it off and now we have to just keep going.”

Question: What did you see from Kelly Bryant today?

Cain: “Mostly confidence and he was playing fast. I already know he is a confident player but once he is rolling. I was just very proud of how he managed the game today.”

Question: Can you walk us through, you get the play call, you look out there and see the man and think, if he puts it in the spot you’re just going to run under it?

Cain: “At the end of the day, we had been working on that pass. I just saw him execute it and I had to make the play for him. I know he works hard just to make that throw so I had to come down with it.”

Question: Tony Elliott just said 43 guys played on offense alone, was it good to see some of these guys that work hard with you to get out there and get some playing time?

Cain: “It actually was good just to see T.J. (Chase), Amari (Rodgers), Tee (Higgins), all of them out there just balling. I was very excited just to watch those boys got out there and play physical and fast. At the end of the day, it’s a blessing knowing that my backups are going in and playing just as hard as me and we need to keep that going.”

Question: So you’re going into the huddle, even after you kind of come out of the game, and you’re going into the offensive huddle. What do you tell those guys and why do you get back in the huddle?

Cain: “Mostly just to keep their confidence up because at the end of the day, you always want to be there for them because I know that they will be there for me at the end of the day. I just always want to be that role model, always just keep everything going. So if they have any questions I can just always be their right hand man.”
