Tony Elliott and Jeff Scott will have plenty of young running backs to work with during their first season as the co-coordinators of Clemson’s hurry-up, no-huddle offense.
C.J. Davidson, the lone senior on the 2015 roster, finished second on the team in rushing last season with 250 yards and was tied for third with three touchdowns.
Zac Brooks would have been the starter in the 2014 season opener against Georgia, but he was shut down with a foot injury and was redshirted. In 204 snaps over two seasons, Brooks has rushed for 365 yards and two scores.
Three freshmen saw time in 2014.
Wayne Gallman had a team-best 769 yards and was second with four touchdowns. His 4.78 yards per carry was also highest on the team. Tyshon Dye ended up second at 4.72 yards per carry. In four games, he had 32 carries for 151 yards and two scores. Adam Choice rushed 50 times for 218 yards and a touchdown over six games before he went down with a torn ACL.
A signee with the 2014 class like Dye and Choice, C.J. Fuller was redshirted last season. Gone from the 2014 squad is D.J. Howard, who had 195 yards and three touchdowns in his final season.
Clemson won’t sign a running back when signing day rolls around next month. For the 2016 class, the number appears to be set at one. Here are some of the candidates to keep an eye over the next several months.
Tavien Feaster – Spartanburg
Shortly after a tweet from his father said that a decision would made in the not too distant future, Feaster confirmed to TCI on Sunday that he was close to making a decision. Feaster wouldn’t list a leader, but most folks in the industry believe Clemson is the team to beat. Auburn, Georgia and Tennessee are the others receiving consideration.
Tre Harbison – Shelby, North Carolina – Crest
The nephew of former Clemson defensive backs coach Charlie Harbison, instate schools are showing the most interest right now: N.C. State, UNC and Wake Forest.
Xavier Gantt – Buford, Georgia
Clemson views Gantt as an athlete: running back and defensive back. At this juncture, his route to a Clemson offer is probably as a defensive back. Gantt has offers from Georgia Tech, Iowa, Miami, Mississippi State, Ohio State and Wake Forest.
Antonio Williams – New London, North Carolina – North Stanly
Williams claimed an early offer from Clemson, but is currently not on the market. Now a Wisconsin commitment, Williams’ first pledge was made to North Carolina.
