NC State came into Saturday’s game at Littlejohn Coliseum averaging 88 points per game and as one of the top transition teams in the country.
However, the Wolfpack never got in transition and was held to 62 points as Clemson, who has now won eight straight games, rolled to a 78-62 victory to open up play in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Clemson (12-1, 1-0 ACC) continues its best start since the 2008-’09 season with the victory.
The Tigers were led by Marquise Reed’s 18 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Gabe DeVoe added 15 points and had seven rebounds, while Shelton Mitchell dropped in 14 points and had four assists. Donte Grantham had 13 points and nine boards and center Elijah Thomas had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
NC State (11-4, 0-1 ACC) shot a season-low 34.8 percent from the field. The Tigers shot 43.3 percent, including 53.1 in the second half. The Tigers are 13-of-15 from the foul line.
Clemson had a 24-10 edge in points off turnovers as NC State turned the ball over 14 times. The Tigers also had a 42-22 edge in points in the paint.
The Tigers took control of the game midway through the second half when they quickly extended a six point lead to 11 points thanks to a couple of Grantham baskets.
Clemson later went on a 6-0 run following a Reed layup to extend the lead to 62-43 with 8:28 to play. Mitchell’s jumper with 4:54 to play extended the lead to 21 points, 69-48, the Tigers largest lead of the afternoon.
The Tigers led 33-24 at the break, thanks to a 15-4 run to close the half. The Tigers trailed 20-18 until the run which began at the 5:35 mark of the half.
Clemson’s next game will be at Boston College at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
