Clemson landed two of the Volunteer State’s top wide receivers in the 2017 recruiting cycle: Tee Higgins and Amari Rodgers.
The Tigers are in an advantageous position right now with another one of Tennessee’s premier prospects.
Lance Wilhoite, the top-ranked prospect in Tennessee for the 2019 class, told TCI that Clemson is among his favorites at this point in his recruiting process.
“Top three as of now,” Wilhoite said of the Tigers.
The four-star from Franklin Road Academy (Nashville) named Ohio State and Florida State as the other schools in his top three right now.
Wilhoite (6-2, 180) said Clemson stands out because it meets most of the criteria for his college choice.
“I’m starting to get a list of things I would like to see in schools,” he said, “and Clemson is starting to check most of them off.”
Wilhoite cited location, early playing time, recruiting success and climate as some of the things that will factor into his future decision.
Clemson co-offensive coordinator and receivers coach Jeff Scott extended an offered Wilhoite in December.
Newly hired Clemson 10th assistant Lemanski Hall stopped by his school last week.
“He told my coach that he wanted me there (at Clemson) soon,” Wilhoite said, “and to keep building that relationship with him and the staff.”
Wilhoite is planning to visit Clemson sometime this offseason.
“It will probably be in March or February,” he said. “I hope to get closer to the coaching staff and finally be able to see Clemson.”
In addition to his top three, Wilhoite touts offers from Tennessee, Louisville, Arkansas, LSU, Virginia Tech, South Carolina, Mississippi State and a number of others.
Wilhoite is ranked as the No. 1 overall prospect in Tennessee for the 2019 class (No. 103 nationally) by the 247Sports composite rankings.
As a junior last season, Wilhoite recorded 67 receptions for 1,067 yards and 13 touchdowns.
