Many of the nation’s best 2019 prospects convened at Clemson last Saturday for the program’s elite junior day.

Among the headlining junior day attendees was Hyattsville (Md.) DeMatha four-star athlete DeMarcco Hellams.

It was Hellams’ first time at Clemson since March 2017, and he left highly impressed after his second experience on campus.

“I really enjoyed being back up there, getting to see the facilities, coaches and overall just being around the university, just getting a better feel for it,” Hellams told The Clemson Insider.

Hellams (6-2, 205) is ranked as a top-five prospect in Maryland and top-100 overall prospect in the 2019 class.

The big-time recruit was blown away by what Clemson has to offer, including its state-of-the-art football operations complex.

“I think it’s easily one of the best in the nation,” Hellams said, “but that’s what one of the best in the nation deserves. They’ve worked for it.”

Hellams is being recruited as a wide receiver and/or defensive back by various suitors. The Tigers like him on the defensive side of the ball and extended an offer last February.

Clemson co-defensive backs coach Mike Reed spent extensive time with Hellams and explained how the Tigers see him fitting in should he choose to go there.

“We just talked about how I’d fit in at Clemson, not just on the field but a great character and being reliable and things like that,” Hellams said. “We also talked about the statistics of the defense, ranked amongst the top every year and competing for national championships. I would be playing the safety position, able to roam the field, cover and occasional blitzes.”

Hellams has a list of close to two dozen scholarship offers featuring other heavyweights such as Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State and Virginia Tech.

With a plethora of premier college options, Hellams isn’t in a hurry with the recruiting process and wants to make sure he makes the right choice.

“I don’t have any timeline (for a commitment) as of now,” he said. “When I feel the time is right for me and my future I’ll commit to a school.”

Hellams isn’t claiming any favorites right now.

That said, the Tigers made a move with him during the visit and look to have positioned themselves well in his recruitment.

“I have no leaders,” Hellams said, “but Clemson is definitely a school that stands out to me.”

Hellams is ranked by ESPN as the No. 55 prospect overall prospect in the 2019 class.
