The Clemson Insider takes a look back at Clemson’s 2-1 win over William & Mary on Sunday afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
Here is a look at how the Tigers did in getting their first weekend series sweep since 2009.
What happened?
The Tigers (3-0) took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning. Back-to-back singles from Chris Williams and Robert Jolly gave Clemson runners on the corners and Drew Wharton picked up an RBI on a groundout. The Tigers doubled their lead in the fourth as three walks loaded the bases and Justin Hawkins picked up his first RBI on a HBP to make it 2-0. The Tribe (0-3) would break through for a run in the sixth to trim the lead to 2-1, but the Clemson bullpen would shut them down the rest of the game to complete the sweep.
Game-Changing Moment:
The game changed in the sixth inning. Tiger starter Jake Higginbotham had tossed 5.1 perfect innings before consecutive hits chased him from the game. Travis Marr entered in relief to shut down the rally and the Tribe never got another runner into scoring position.
What went right?
Clemson’s pitching staff had another solid day. Three pitchers (Higginbotham, Marr, and Ryley Gilliam) combined to allow a single run on three hits and one walk with seven strikeouts. Robert Jolly led all hitters with two hits while Cromwell, Williams, and Wilkie also had base knocks.
What went wrong?
The Tiger offense again struggled to get hits to fall as they recorded six hits for the second straight day. Clemson did draw seven walks, but wasted several opportunities in stranding 10 runners.
