Following his team’s win over Georgia Tech last Saturday, Clemson head coach Brad Brownell indicated his team seemed a little tired. He worries the the rigors of a long season are having its affects.
“There are certain times when guys body types do not lend themselves being able to play all day, all the time and then other guys it wears on them a little bit,” Brownell said Tuesday as he previewed Wednesday’s 9 p.m. home finale against Florida State. “Some guys can go all day and don’t really show that much of an effect, but I think you kind of get to know your guys the best you can and you hope they have some dialogue with you and you talk to them about it.”
Brownell gave his team Sunday off after the Tech game and then they had a light practice on Monday with a couple of guys. He said today’s practice will be a hard one.
“There are certain times when guys body types do not lend themselves being able to play all day, all the time and then other guys it wears on them a little bit,” he said. “Some guys can go all day and don’t really show that much of an effect, but I think you kind of get to know your guys the best you can and you hope they have some dialogue with you and you talk to them about it.”
Brownell said he could see during the Georgia Tech game that certain players were making mental errors they normally do not make.
“Mentally you need to be sharp so they are not making mistakes,” the Clemson coach said. “We had some mistakes mentally against Georgia Tech as well. It was not just all physical. There were mental mistakes that we made that for a couple of guys it was uncharacteristic. That is when I started wondering about just the drain and the stress and the pressure of it all.
“Sometimes you do not take into consideration that these are young people with a lot going on. There were times when they are a little tired and stressed so it is just as much mentally about managing their reps.”
With the FSU game being a nine o’clock start, Brownell is hopeful the extra time will allow his team a little more rest than they normally get for a home game on a school day.
“Sometimes school-day home games are almost challenging for the home team depending on guy’s class schedules,” he said. “You never really know what other guys are going through.
“When you are on the road you can dictate what your guys do, take a nap, relax. You can do stuff in the morning, watching stuff in the morning … go get your shoot around in. On school days a lot of times your guys have a lot going on so I’m hopeful that maybe the nine o’clock start will be good for our team from the standpoint that maybe our guys get a couple of hours off to kind of catch their breath from the day and then recharged and get ready to go for the game.”
