Through the first five days of Clemson’s spring practice, one position group has stood out among the rest, according to head coach Dabo Swinney.

“I think our corners have been exceptional the first five days,” Swinney said after Clemson’s practice and half scrimmage Wednesday. “That’s one of the things I was telling the team is, if I just had to (pick) a winner after five days, I think our corners have won the day.”

Swinney named rising junior Trayvon Mullen, rising senior Mark Fields and rising sophomore A.J. Terrell as a few of the cornerbacks he has been especially pleased with early in the spring.

“I love what I’ve seen out of Trayvon, A.J. and Mark,” Swinney said. “All three of those guys are really aggressive and just very focused, making plays on the ball. So that group, you better have the right mindset when you line up against that group.”

Swinney added that redshirt freshman LeAnthony Williams is making strides. Clemson’s coach also likes the work ethic and attitude he has seen from Brian Dawkins Jr., who saw limited action in his first active season in 2017 after redshirting the previous year.

“So, I just think as a group, they’ve been very solid these first five days,” Swinney said. “They’re making some really good plays on the ball, winning some of the matchups with the 50-50 balls. I’ve been very pleased with those players.”

With that said, Swinney knows that Clemson’s depth at the cornerback position leaves something to be desired.

Swinney expects that to change when four-star cornerback signees Kyler McMichael and Mario Goodrich join the team this summer. McMichael was ranked as a national top-100 overall prospect by all three major recruiting services, while Goodrich was unanimously tabbed as a top-150 national recruit.

“I don’t feel better about the depth,” Swinney said. “I love our frontline guys. I think we’re going to be fine there.

“But I’ll feel better when Kyler and Mario get here. When they get here, I’ll feel a lot better. That’s two more elite players that you’re throwing into that room. So, we’ll have seven. We’ll have the numbers that we need.”
