Cromwell delivers in the clutch

The Tigers (13-1) earned their first ACC win over Georgia Tech (9-4) Friday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

Logan Davidson began the eighth inning with a single to right center followed by a Seth Beer single which would advance Davidson to third base. Senior Patrick Cromwell’s (1-4) singled up the middle scoring Logan Davidson to secure Clemson’s 3-2 win.

“I was trying to hit a fly ball to center field so if the pitch was outside, I’d hit a fly ball out to left, if it was inside I could turn around and hit a fly ball out to the right,” Cromwell said. “I got a little bit on top of it and because of my approach I ended up squeaking one up the middle.”

Squeaking the ball up the middle was just what the Tigers needed from Cromwell to get the Tigers off to a good start in league play.

While the team had a lot of questions coming into the season including how it could completely replace its pitching rotation, the team has found ways to win 13 of their 14 games even when their offense has not been strong.

The secret to success? Everybody is doing their job and having fun with it.

“I think we are just doing out thing really,” Cromwell said. “Talking to the guys in the lineup one through nine, everybody just has their own approach to the game and everybody is trying to get quality at bats. On the pitching side, the pitchers have had a lot to prove… and they have been doing really well and trying to show that their work got better this year. Right now we’re having a little fun out there and we’re never out of any game.”

Despite a successful start to the season, the best since 2010, there is a lot of baseball left to be played. How will the team continue the early momentum?

“Just have fun with it,” Cromwell said. “Every day is a new day to get better and to win games so we are just trying to take it day by day and win as many games as possible.”

While they found success Friday night, the Tigers have two more games against Georgia Tech this weekend to keep their top 10 national ranking and get an early lead in the ACC standings.
