Instant Replay: West Virginia 2 Clemson 0

CLEMSON, SC — Here is a look back at Clemson’s (0-1) season-opening loss to West Virginia (1-0) on Friday afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

What happened?

The Mountaineers scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to take a 2-0 win over the Tigers. Neither team was able to push a run across against the other’s starter, but Blake Smith pitched 4.0 innings of relief while four Clemson relievers allowed the two runs. Hits were at a premium during the game as the Tigers recorded only six hits while the Mountaineers had five hits.

Game-Changing Moment:

The game changed in the early innings as Clemson stranded six runners in the first three innings (and 11 total) while West Virginia left only three runners on base the entire game. While the Tigers struggled to take advantage of their chances in the early innings, the Mountaineers were very opportunistic in the late innings, scoring their runs on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly.

What went right?

Clemson starter Matthew Crownover was everything Clemson needs him to be, going 6.0 innings and allowing only three hits with eight strikeouts. Clate Schmidt was solid in his first outing of 2015, striking out all three batters he faced. Offensively, six different Tigers had hits including redshirt freshman Reed Rohlman coming off the bench with a double (the only extra base hit in the contest). Defensively, Clemson did not commit an error.

What went wrong?

The Tigers again struggled to bring runners in, stranding 11 total in the contest. Clemson was unable to take advantage of six walks and had only two hits over the final four frames. Alex Bostic and Taylor Vetzel had tough outings out of the bullpen, something the Tigers will need both players to bounce back from as the season progresses.
