J.C. Chalk reconnected with former Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris when he visited SMU on Saturday.
No need to worry, Clemson fans. Morris isn’t trying to snag Chalk from the Tigers and Chalk isn’t looking to back out of his commitment.
The SMU campus, which is about 40 miles from Chalk’s home. Since several of his Argyle High School teammates were invited to the Mustangs’ Junior Day, he decided to join them. Morris offered Chalk a few weeks earlier.
“(Morris) just gave me an offer saying, ‘if something is to happen at Clemson, like the coaches leave or something like that, always know that you’re welcome here type deal,'” Chalk said. “He understands and he’s not really trying to recruit me, so that’s been nice. I really just wanted to see how he was, and also go with some of my teammates.”
The first commitment in Clemson’s 2016 class, Chalk was on campus in January for the Elite Junior Day.
“It was really good,” he said. “I had a lot of fun building a relationship with the other commits.
“I’ve met most of them. Me and the coaches got to talk a lot with them, so it was a lot of fun getting to become closer with the other recruits, because a lot of them I didn’t know as well as the coaches. It was more getting to be comfortable with them and hang out with them and stuff.”
All of Clemson’s current commitments were on campus that afternoon.
“I’ve gotten to meet most of them, all of them seem like great guys,” Chalk said. “I’m looking forward to spending more time with them as the years go on, and get to know them more.
“Just all of them seem like really good guys and are some great athletes, but everybody already knows that. I’m looking forward to getting to spend more time with them and getting to build a better relationship.”
Among the coaches, Chalk spent most of the Junior Day with his future position coach.
“I got to spend a lot of time with coach (Danny) Pearman, so that was good, getting to continue to build a good relationship with him,” Chalk said. “We got to spend a lot of time with all of the coaches, even coach (Dabo) Swinney.
“It was good just to be able to make those relationships stronger, and being able to catch up, because I don’t get to go down there as much as a lot of people do.”
As a junior, Chalk caught 33 passes for 451 yards with six touchdowns.
