Unlikely Spiller will be back in Buffalo

By Will Vandervort.

There is a lot of talk about the NFL Draft and where former Clemson players like Vic Beasley, Stephone Anthony and Grady Jarrett might land.

That’s all good and all, but those guys are not the only former Tigers that have a lot riding on their future in the next few months. Former Clemson running back C.J. Spiller will hit the free agent market on March 10 when NFL teams can officially begin to sign restricted and unrestricted free agents.

Spiller is an unrestricted free agent.

What is the difference between a restricted free agent and an unrestricted free agent?

Unrestricted free agents have completed four or more accrued seasons. An unrestricted free agent is free to sign with any club with no draft choice compensation owed to his old club.

A restricted free agent may be subject to a qualifying offer. A franchise tag can also be placed on a restricted free agent, which allows a player’s current team to try and sign him to a longer or new deal without him having the ability to negotiate with other teams.

Buffalo Bills general manager Doug Whaley told reporters last week that his team was interested in re-signing Spiller, but there was a substantial gap between the team and Spiller that needed to be worked on.
