RALEIGH – Clemson defeated NC State 6-4 Friday afternoon as Matthew Crownover pitched a gem for the Tigers.
Matthew Crownover had a one-hitter going into the seventh inning. Crownover finished going 7.0 innings and only giving up two hits, one run and one earned run with seven strikeouts.
Matt Campbell pitched the eight for the Tigers and gave up a three-run homerun. Drew Moyer closed it out in the ninth for the Tigers to earn the save.
Clemson took the lead in the top of the first inning. Tyler Slaton walked and advanced to second on an error by the second baseman. Steven Duggar singled to right to score Slaton and the Tigers led 1-0.
In the seventh inning Clemson took command with five runs. Eli White singled to left to start the inning. White advanced to second on a balk and then to third on a wild pitch. With two outs Tyler Krieger was intentionally walked. Steven Duggar then walked to load the bases. White scored on a wild pitch with Krieger and Duggar advancing. Chris Okey walked and Krieger and Duggar scored on another wild pitch. Weston Wilson walked advancing Okey to second. Chase Pinder singled to right to score Okey. Weston Wilson advanced to third on an error before another wild pitch brought him home to make it 6-0 Tigers.
NC State got on the board in the bottom of the seventh with a solo homerun. They added three more in the eighth with a three-run homerun to cut the Tiger’s lead to 6-4.
The Tigers looked to be ready to add another run in the ninth after Pinder got a two out single, but Okey slipped coming around third and was eventually tagged out at the plate.
Clemson moved to 8-4 on the season and 1-0 in the ACC. The two teams meet again Saturday at 3 PM for game two.
