Here is a look back at Clemson’s (10-10, 3-4 ACC) 4-0, 10-inning win over Virginia Tech (11-11, 4-3 ACC) on Friday evening at English Field.
What happened?
Both starting pitchers were fantastic as the game was scoreless through nine innings. In the tenth inning, Eli White led off with a walk but was subsequently picked off. Tyler Slaton then walked, and following a pitching change Steven Duggar walked as well. After an out and walk to Reed Rohlman to load the bases, Chris Okey hit the first pitch he saw over the wall in left field to put the Tigers on top 4-0. Drew Moyer would finish the game off in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Clemson a big Friday night win.
Game-Changing Moment:
After nine innings of pitching dominance, the game changed with a single pitch…and a single swing of the bat as Okey blasted his third homer of the season for a grand slam to score the only runs of the game.
What went right?
Matthew Crownover was outstanding again, throwing 8.1 innings of scoreless ball on five hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. His defense backed him up as well as the Tigers did not commit an error in the contest. Offensively, Okey’s homer was one of his two hits while Virginia native Chase Pinder also collected two hits to pace Clemson’s six hit attack.
What went wrong?
In a pitchers duel that featured six hits per team and no errors, it’s hard to find much wrong with either team in the game. However, the Tigers (like the Hokies) stranded eight runners in the contest…including six in scoring position.
