Confidence in competition

Clemson’s annual Orange & White Spring game was the team’s chance to showcase what they have been working on in practice over the last six of weeks and the running backs showed out.

The White team, which had senior back C.J Davidson, sophomore back Wayne Gallman and freshman back C.J. Fuller, came out on top 35-24 thanks to 212 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.

“It  was a really good representation of the spring that we had. I felt the entire offense showed a lot of improvement,” Clemson co-offensive coordinator Jeff Scott said afterwards. “It was good to see some of those guys be able to make plays and kind of put an exclamation mark on top of spring.”

By the end of the first half, Gallman had totaled all of his 71 rushing yards which included a 60-yard run that allowed him to set up his own score — a one-yard touchdown that tied the game at seven in the first quarter.

“I just think everyone came out here with a point to prove and showed what we’ve been doing through this whole spring,” Gallman said. “I think we did a great job with it.”

Although Gallman is still at the top of the depth chart after his performance on Saturday, the coaches were very pleased by the talent they saw on the field from all of the running backs.

“I think Wayne will probably start and the guys behind him are all pushing,” said co-offensive coordinator Tony Elliot. “I like the competition. They’re all pushing each other, and as you saw today, they all bring something to the table and you feel good when you’ve got that many guys that you feel you can run any of them out there and they’re going to be able to execute the offense.”

Davidson was productive too, totaling 100 rushing yards, including a 54-yard touchdown run in the second quarter that gave the White a 21-10 lead. He ended the game two touchdowns as he also scored on a one-yard run in the first quarter.

“C.J. Davidson had his best day of the entire spring,” Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said.

Davidson had to miss some of the beginning of spring practice due to an injury, but the hard work that he has put into his shortened practice time was evident in the results in the Spring Game.

“He really has just kind of gotten going the last half of it, so it was good to see him get some nice plays,” Swinney said.

As the spring season comes to a close, the next step will be for the players to complete their finals then focus on their summer workouts before heading back to camp in August. The running backs will continue to compete amongst themselves for playing time and from what it looks like, the competition is bringing out the best in each player.

“I saw some excellent things today from all those guys,” Swinney said. “You’ve got a good situation there, you’re confident in all those guys.”

After the performance the running backs had Saturday, it looks like there will be a lot to look forward to in the fall.
