CLEMSON, SC — Here is a look back at Clemson’s (25-24) 6-3 win over #18 College of Charleston (35-10) on Tuesday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
What happened?
The Tigers struck first with a run in the bottom of the third inning. With two outs, Eli White reached base on a HBP and Steven Duggar followed with a single through the left side that scored White all the way from first as he was running on the pitch. Clemson added a run to their lead in the fourth. Chris Okey drew a one-out walk and Weston Wilson followed with a single. Tyler Slaton then hit a RBI single through the right side to play Okey and put the Tigers on top 2-0. The Cougars tied the game in the top of the fifth on a two-run homer but Clemson answered in the bottom of the frame. Robert Jolly led off with a double and White followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Duggar picked up his second RBI of the day with a double to put the Tigers up 3-2. Tyler Krieger extended the lead to 4-2 with a RBI groundout and Reed Rohlman lined a RBI single to center to give Clemson a 5-2 lead. The Tigers added an insurance run in the eighth as Slaton led off with a double, moved to third on a balk, and came in to score on a sac fly by Glenn Batson. College of Charleston scored a single run in the ninth, but Taylor Vetzel came on to close out the game and give Clemson a 6-3 win.
Game-Changing Moment:
The game changed in the top of the seventh inning. With the Tigers holding a 5-2 lead, the Cougars loaded the bases with no outs. Alex Bostic came in from the bullpen and shut down the threat with two straight strikeouts and a flyout to right to end the threat and preserve Clemson’s lead.
What went right?
The Tigers pitching, a question mark entering the game, came up big throughout the contest. Clemson starter Clate Schmidt allowed two runs on four hits in 5.0 innings and Alex Bostic was outstanding in relief, allowing a single run on two hits in 2.1 innings, for his best outing of the year. White had three hits to lead a 12-hit attack and Duggar had a team-best two RBI.
What went wrong?
For the most part, Clemson played a solid game. Kevin Pohle had a tough outing out of the bullpen, allowing two hits and all three runners he faced to reach base but Bostic worked out of the jam. The Tigers stranded eight runners in the contest, including five in scoring position.
