With Ebenezer Ogundeko dismissed from the team last week, Martin Aiken and Chris Register moved in behind Kevin Dodd at defensive end opposite Shaq Lawson according to Clemson’s post spring depth chart which it released on Friday.
Other than Ogundeko’s replacement there were no real surprises on the Tigers’ two-deep, though eight freshmen, including four on the offensive line, are listed as backups.
Freshmen offensive linemen Mitch Hyatt, Taylor Hearn, Jake Fruhmorgen and Justin Falcinelli are all listed as second team offensive linemen. Hyatt is listed second behind Isaiah Battle at left tackle, Hearn is second team left guard behind Eric Mac Lain, Falcinelli is second team center behind Ryan Norton and Fruhmorgen is behind Joe Gore at right tackle.
Redshirt sophomore Tyron Crowder is listed ahead of fellow sophomore Maverick Morris at right guard.
Clemson has 11 returning starters overall, including seven on offense, three on defense and one on special teams. This marks the fewest total of returning starters Clemson has had since the 2007 season when the Tigers also had 11.
While Clemson has just 10 returning starters from the offensive and defensive units combined, the 22 starters listed on the depth chart include 20 players who have started at least one game. Dodd and Cordrea Tankersley are the only starters listed on the two-deep who have never started a game.
Deshaun Watson, who will be returning from postseason ACL surgery when Clemson opens camp in August, is listed as the first string quarterback, while Nick Schuessler is listed as the No. 2 quarterback.
At running back, Wayne Gallman is listed as the starter for right now and it was a little surprising to see C.J. Davidson has pushed ahead to the No. 2 spot. The senior and former walk-on returned from a minor injury to have a very good second-half of the spring. Zac Brooks and Tyshon Dye are listed as second-team running backs as well.
Charone Peake, Mike Williams and Artavis Scott are listed as starters in the Tigers’ three wide receiver set. Germone Hopper, who head coach Dabo Swinney says had his best practices since he has been on campus, is listed as a backup to Peake and Scott, while Trevion Thomson and Hunter Renfrow are also listed on the two deep.
This is the fewest number of defensive starters to return on a Clemson team since the 1979 team also had three coming back. That was Danny Ford’s first team at Clemson, which finished the year 8-4.
Carlos Watkins and D. J. Reader are listed as the starters at defensive tackle, while Roderick Byers and Scott Pagano will back them up. Richard Yeargin, who really came on the last half of the spring, will be Lawson’s backup when the Tigers begin fall camp.
Korrin Wiggins is listed as the starter at strongside linebacker, where he will also serve as the starting nickel back. Redshirt sophomore Dorian O’Daniel will back him up there, while Wiggins will also serve as the backup to Jayron Kearse at free safety.
B.J. Goodson will go into the summer with the edge over redshirt freshman Kendall Joseph at middle linebacker, while Ben Boulware is the starter at weakside linebacker. Freshman Korie Rogers is listed as the second team weakside backer.
T.J. Green and Jadar Johnson are listed as co-starters at strong safety, while Mackensie Alexander will start at one of the two cornerback positions. The other starter is Tankersley, while Ryan Carter and Adrian Baker are listed as backups.
Ammon Lakip is still the starter at placekicker, while Andy Teasdall gets the nod at punter. Jim Brown is listed as the new long snapper, while Seth Ryan, the son of Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan, will be the holder on field goals and PATs.
Hopper and Scott are listed one and two as punt returners and Gallman and Green are listed as the starters on kickoff returns.
Clemson has just 43 returning lettermen, 22 on offense, 20 on defense and one on special teams. This is the fewest returning lettermen Clemson has had since the 2003 season when that team also had 43 returning.
