ESPN Analyst on Clemson’s ‘Biggest Improvement’ from Week 1

In an episode of ESPN’s College Football Live this week, analyst Tom Luginbill weighed in on Clemson (2-1, 0-1 ACC) ahead of Saturday’s marquee conference matchup against fourth-ranked Florida State (3-0, 1-0) at Death Valley.

The Tigers are coming off a 48-14 home win over Florida Atlantic last Saturday, when Clemson produced 367 total yards and did not allow any sacks for the first time this season while playing a clean game offensively after a turnover-prone first two contests.

Quarterback Cade Klubnik completed 16-of-27 passes for 169 yards with three passing touchdowns and rushed six times for 35 yards and a touchdown. The running backs shared the wealth, totaling 163 yards, though star Will Shipley still has yet to rush for a touchdown so far in 2023.

Clemson scored two offensive touchdowns in the first quarter vs. FAU and two more in the second en route to a 34-0 halftime lead.

“I think it is going to be really interesting because for the first time this season, Clemson got off to a fast start on offense. They needed to do that,” Luginbill said. “They needed Cade Klubnik to play clean. It is alarming to see that Will Shipley has zero touchdowns this year. He had 15 a year ago, so they’ve got to get that part going.”

Luginbill added that he thinks true freshman receiver Tyler Brown has solved a problem for Clemson’s offense.

Brown was named ACC Rookie of the Week after recording three receptions for 49 yards with two touchdowns against FAU. He has tallied seven receptions for 79 yards and the two scores in three games this season.

“The biggest improvement I saw this week from Week 1 is wide receiver Tyler Brown,” Luginbill said. “The freshman has come in and I think kind of fixed what has been an issue for them — and that is their inability to separate verses tight coverage. He caught two touchdowns last week. They might have a nice young weapon in there that they can utilize and get Cade Klubnik some bigger windows to throw into. He didn’t have that against Duke. At times he didn’t have that each of the last two weeks.”

Luginbill believes it’s imperative for the Tigers’ attack to get things going right off the bat against the Seminoles.

“So, really good for Clemson offensively to get off to a fast start like they did last week, and they are going to have to do it this week against a much better football team on defense,” he said.

Saturday’s game is set for a noon kickoff on ABC.
