CLEMSON — In Saturday’s 31-14 win at Syracuse, Clemson’s defense stifled the previously undefeated Orange, generating five sacks and three turnovers. Among those turnovers was a pass intercepted by junior linebacker Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
Following his impressive performance, Trotter met with the media Monday, discussing the importance of both personal and collective mentality and previewing Clemson’s upcoming game against Wake Forest.
–With the victory in Syracuse’s JMA Wireless Dome, the Tigers (3-2, 1-2 ACC) picked up their first win against a conference opponent while regaining their winning record on the season. Trotter was asked how his team was able to create success on the road following a difficult loss to Florida State. “It was very good to get that win after a tough overtime loss. It definitely got us back to where we need to be…and it shows like the type of mentality and the type of mindset that we had throughout the week, learning from our mistakes obviously, but flushing it and then moving on to the next game.”
–On the next play after Trotter’s interception in the fourth quarter, running back Phil Mafah completed a 32-yard run for a touchdown. This sequence prevented Syracuse from potentially cutting the lead to one score and increased the Tigers’ lead to 31-14. According to Trotter, “it was a lot of complimentary football right there, and it really just showed what Clemson is about.”
–In the third quarter, both Trotter and freshman defensive end T.J. Parker contributed to a timely sack against quarterback Garrett Shrader. Parker finished with 2.0 sacks in the game, the most by any Clemson freshman since Myles Murphy in 2020. Trotter commented on why Parker has been so successful this season. “He’s just a guy that wreaks havoc. He does his job, he’s going to be in the right place when he needs to be there and he’s going to just create a new line of scrimmage. You know, he’s a really big guy, a physical guy, and he’s just been very productive for us. It just shows his work ethic.”
–This Saturday, Clemson takes on Wake Forest in Memorial Stadium at 3:30 p.m. Trotter was quick to explain why he loves the weekly challenges in ACC play. “You always want to be challenged because… playing against really good players, what it’s going to do is really make you better.”
