Swinney Talks Future at WR Position

Clemson has been bitten by the injury bug at wide receiver this year. But head coach Dabo Swinney is excited about what the future holds for his team’s receiving corps when the unit gets fully healthy – and adds even more talent to the position next year.

“We don’t have Cole (Turner), we don’t have Antonio (Williams)… We don’t have Misun Kelley. He had to have surgery and he’s done for the year. And then we got a couple great ones we think coming in in January,” Swinney said during his Zoom conference call with the media Sunday evening.

The Tigers have a pair of highly touted receiver commits in their 2024 recruiting class in five-star Bryant Wesco and four-star TJ Moore.

As for the pass catchers on the current roster, receivers like breakout freshman Tyler Brown and redshirt sophomore Troy Stellato have been able to gain valuable experience this season with Turner out for the year and Williams being sidelined by injuries.

Along with Brown, Clemson signed three other receivers in the 2023 recruiting class who are now true freshmen: Kelley, Noble Johnson and Ronan Hanafin. As Swinney alluded to, Kelley is out for the season after undergoing a minor surgery last month. The Tigers are redshirting Johnson, while they pulled the redshirt off Hanafin earlier this season due to Turner going down with his season-ending injury.

“Ronan has really made some progress. I mean, it doesn’t feel like it right now because we’re battling through some things. But we’re gaining some really, really good experience,” Swinney said.

“Getting Stellato the experience that he’s got… because obviously for two years he’s done nothing. He’s not been available (due to injuries), and so for him to be able to finally have a season, his first season since he’s come to Clemson, to really be able to play – and he’s really not 100 percent healthy, but he’s a tough kid, too. I’m really proud of him.”

Swinney likes the pieces his team has to work with at receiver right now, and he’ll like the group even more when it’s at full strength.

“We’ve got good depth,” he said, “but not anywhere near what we’ll have this spring once we get all these horses ready to roll.”
