Clemson defensive coordinator Wes Goodwin met with the media on Monday as the Tigers get ready for Saturday’s game against Georgia Tech.
Goodwin, whose defense really stepped up with a strong effort late in last Saturday’s win over Notre Dame, was asked whether he pays attention to social media at all during the season.
Goodwin and his group have gotten criticism at times this year, though there’s been plenty of praise for the unit as well with the Tigers putting together some great performances on that side of the ball. Goodwin was asked if given the way his defense has performed overall, if he feels he’s proven himself to people who may have doubted his credentials as a defensive coordinator since he was named to that position.
Regardless of what people are saying about him and Clemson’s defense, Goodwin says he’s not listening to the “outside noise.”
“Honestly, I’ve pretty much eliminated all social media,” said Goodwin, who’s in his second full season as the Tigers’ defensive coordinator. “So, unless somebody tells me about it, I’m obviously pretty oblivious to outside noise and just focusing on the task at hand.
“People can write whatever they want, say about me or whatever. But I show up every day with the mindset just to get better and help this defense get better and improve on a daily basis. That’s my main focus every day I wake up – give Clemson my best.”
Clemson ranks sixth nationally in total defense this season (273.8 yards per game allowed) and 37th nationally in scoring defense (21.2 points per game allowed). Goodwin’s unit is 15th nationally in tackles for loss (67) and has forced 15 turnovers this season, tied for 30th in the country.
The Tigers’ game against Georgia Tech at Memorial Stadium on Saturday is set to kick off at noon on ABC.
