CLEMSON — The Clemson Tigers showcased their defensive grit and offensive resiliency in Saturday’s 31-20 win over 20th-ranked North Carolina at Memorial Stadium.
North Carolina’s offense prodded deep into Clemson’s territory in the first quarter on three separate drives. However, those opportunities amounted to only one touchdown, thanks to Clemson defenders such as Peter Woods, T.J. Parker and Nate Wiggins.
On UNC’s opening drive, the Tar Heels marched 68 yards, arriving on Clemson’s 7-yard line. On the brink of a score, the freshmen duo of Woods and Parker forced and recovered a fumble, respectively, ending the Tar Heels’ chance to create momentum and an early lead against the Tigers.
At the end of the first quarter, the Tar Heels had a chance to capture a two-score lead when UNC running back Omarion Hampton ran 64 yards to Clemson’s goal line. However, Wiggins, the veteran cornerback, eradicated Hampton’s potential score.
Wiggins’ stripped the ball from Hampton’s hand as he was running into the Clemson end zone. Wiggins’ hustle allowed the Tigers to take over on offense and avoid a double-digit deficit early in the game.
While the defense found a way to keep the Tigers in a quarter in which they were outgained 198-54, Clemson’s offense responded by turning on the heat, scoring four times out of its next seven possessions.
The Tigers (7-4, 4-4 ACC) found ways to overcome adversity and embody the “complimentary football” that head coach Dabo Swinney preaches to his team.
