CLEMSON – Senior Day is meant to be a a moment of celebration and happiness for the class that paved the way during their college careers. Last year in Death Valley, that wasn’t the case and it stung even more with a loss to a bitter rival.
This year had a different feel, and the intention to make right on last year’s heartbreak was evident on the field. Clemson rallied through early adversity and scored 21 unanswered en route to a 31-20 win over No. 22 North Carolina.
The Tigers faithful were as loud as they’ve been in 2023, and it helped create a perfect sendoff for these seniors even in a year that hasn’t gone to plan. Linebacker Jeremiah Trotter Jr. was one of the many who displayed how much it meant, and he led Clemson in tackles yet again with 11, plus a sack and 1.5 tackles for loss to boot.
“It feels real good. I know last year, we couldn’t get a win for them for their last game in Death Valley and being able to do that tonight and just seeing the smiles on their faces. and seeing how hard everybody worked to get the win tonight. It really felt good,” Trotter said.
Defense was the story for the Tigers Saturday, and it was fitting given the long list of star seniors in Wes Goodwin’s unit. The job isn’t finished, and Clemson turns their focus to South Carolina. Trotter is aware of how important this game is, but he’s not making it too big.
“Rivalry games are something that gets both teams up during the week, but at the end of the day, we just gotta make sure we focus on our work, our gameplan. This upcoming week, and just prepare well and not try to make the game bigger than what it is,” Trotter said.
The 7-4 Tigers travel down to Williams-Brice Stadium Saturday with a chance to get some revenge. Clemson-South Carolina kicks off Nov. 25 at 7:30 p.m., televised on the SEC Network.
