Swinney Gives Injury Update on Shipley

During his postgame press conference, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney gave an injury update on star running back Will Shipley following the 22nd-ranked Tigers’ 38-35 victory over Kentucky in Friday’s Gator Bowl.

Shipley was injured on his long kickoff return in the fourth quarter when he stumbled out of bounds and somersaulted a couple of times. The junior stayed down on the sideline before being helped away from the sideline, and he was on crutches after the game.

“We’ll do an MRI. It’ll either be tomorrow or the next day,” Swinney said. “We’ll wait and see. But initial reports seem to be encouraging, but you never know until you do the MRI.”

Swinney confirmed that it’s a knee injury that Shipley sustained.

“Again, you don’t want to say anything other than all I can say is they felt like it was best-case scenario, just on an observation,” Swinney said. “But they’ve got to do the MRI before you can have (confirmation). We’ve had that go both ways. We’ve had worst-case scenario news and do the MRI and get good news. But initially they said looks like best-case scenario, but we’ll see what the MRI says.”

Shipley totaled 132 all-purpose yards in the Gator Bowl, including 29 rushing yards, 9 receiving yards and 94 yards on two kickoff returns.

The 5-foot-11, 210-pounder entered the Gator Bowl having rushed 156 times for 798 yards with five touchdowns this season, to go with 29 catches for 235 yards and two receiving touchdowns over 11 games (eight starts).
