Veteran Clemson D-Lineman Suspended from Team

CLEMSON — A veteran defensive lineman is currently suspended from the Clemson football team.

The Clemson Insider has confirmed that redshirt senior defensive tackle DeMonte Capehart was arrested last week for unlawful possession of a firearm on school property.

TCI reached out to Clemson Athletics to find out what this means for Capehart going forward. Here’s what we were told:

“We have been aware of the facts of the case from the start, and he is not presently participating in team activities while awaiting completion of all legal and university processes.”

Per sources, TCI has confirmed that Capehart was pulled over, and the gun was found during a search that he consented to. We can tell you the gun was not his, and it was in a trunk and not loaded.

TCI also reached out to Clemson Football for a comment. A Clemson spokesman told TCI that due to policies, this incident will be handled through the Clemson Athletic Department.

Capehart came on down the stretch of the 2023 season as one of Clemson’s most physical and disruptive interior linemen. The 6-foot-5, 320-pounder was credited by the coaching staff with nine quarterback pressures, the second-most among the Tigers’ interior linemen, and was credited with 16 tackles (5.0 for loss), a sack, a pass breakup and a forced fumble in 179 snaps over 12 games.

A former top-50 national recruit from Hartsville, S.C., Capehart has recorded 32 tackles (9.0 for loss), 2.0 sacks, a pass breakup and a forced fumble in 302 snaps over 34 career games from 2020-23.
