CLEMSON – Freshman Jarren Purify got his first career hit, and it was a big one as he delivered a grand slam to left field to extend No. 8 Clemson’s lead to 8-2 over Presbyterian, and that score would hold for a win at Doug Kingsmore Stadium Tuesday night.
The base-clearing bomb was the third grand slam of the season. Last year, the Tigers had six and the program record is eight. This pace of grand slams would break the record with ease..
Home runs were a common occurrence against the Blue Hose as sophomore Cam Cannarella took the first pitch from Sean Hollister 382 feet to take a 1-0 lead. He’s now up to 13 consecutive games with a hit.
Clemson starting pitcher Austin Gordon came in on a pitch count and went two scoreless innings before his day was over. He had 43 pitches and two strikeouts, allowing no hits. Joe Allen came in for relief in the third inning and allowed two quick runs to surrender Clemson’s lead on a sacrifice fly by Joel Dragoo and fielders choice to first by Noah Lebron.
The deficit lasted no time as Jimmy Obertop pulled a pitch for a no-doubt home run into left field, tying the game at 2-2. The next inning, Obertop scored Blake Wright on a single through the left side to take a 3-2 lead. Allen followed his early mishaps with three scoreless innings.
A five-spot in the seventh inning closed the door as Clemson moved to 4-0 on the season. A 10-hit day matched with allowing just three hits secured the win, and the only blunder came with 10 stranded base runners.
Stolen bases arrived for the Tigers as the first of the season came from graduate junior Andrew Ciufo, and he ended up getting two on the night. He was the only one to attempt coming in. Graduate senior Alden Mathes added the third stolen base of the night.
