CLEMSON — The No. 24 Clemson Gymnastics team turned things around Friday night at Littlejohn Coliseum in Clemson by taking down North Carolina.
Coming off last week’s road loss at NC State, the Tigers were hoping to get back on track against the Tar Heels, which they did.
Following the win, gymnasts Rebecca Wells and Sierra Church spoke with the media about their performance and the importance of their “Pink Meet.”
The top finisher in the All-Around, with a score of 39.450, and the top finisher on floor, with a score of 9.950, Wells’ performance on the floor especially stood out. Her round-off 1.5 step out to double full was a strong pass to close-out her routine.
“I have a lot of experience under my belt. It’s been cool to see myself step up as a leader, and to see the freshman step into their confidence,” she said.
One of those freshmen is Church, who had a career-high beam score of 9.925. Her technique in her back handspring layout step-out was flawless, and the round-off back 1.5 dismount was a confident stick.
“I could not have done it without my team. I look to them for confirmation,” she said.
Clemson head coach Amy Smith also commented on Church’s execution on beam.
“Sierra-freaking- Church on beam, showing up. For that freshman to step up in that kind of pressure and deliver the absolute best beam routine that she has ever done. That was a moment – I was getting chills as she was doing that routine,” Smith said.
To make her night even more special, Church’s cousin was honored for her fight against breast cancer. Friday’s meet was deemed a “Pink Meet,” with the main focus surrounding the support and awareness of those with breast cancer.
Church not only had an eventful night on beam, but also a meaningful moment with her cousin, for a cause bigger than herself.
“My cousin got diagnosed last summer with stage four breast cancer and has been battling it this whole year. She finally beat her cancer last week, so it was a special opportunity to experience tonight with her,” Church said.
With one only one more home meet left in their inaugural season, and three meets until the ACC Championship, Clemson Gymnastics is shifting their focus. The team will be facing their first quad meet in Denton, Texas next Sunday at 3 p.m.
