Clemson Beats Manhattan 5-1 on Wednesday

CLEMSON — Eighth-ranked Clemson used a five-run first inning to take down Manhattan 5-1 on Wednesday afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. The Tigers, who swept both games of the midweek series, move to 15-1 on the season while the Jaspers fall to 4-11.

Clemson wasted little time in putting together a big inning in the bottom of the first. Cam Cannarella led off with a double and came in to score on a Blake Wright RBI single. After Jacob Hinderleider reached on an error, Tristan Bissetta and Nathan Hall followed with consecutive RBI singles to extend the lead to 3-0. Jarren Purify capped off the scoring with a two-run single to make it a 5-0 lead after one.

Manhattan got on the board in the sixth with a leadoff homer to cut the lead to 5-1.

Tiger starter Billy Barlow (3-1) earned the win after tossing 5.0 scoreless innings of two-hit ball with three walks and a career-high nine strikeouts. Jasper starter Garret Garbinski (0-2) suffered the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits in 4.0 innings.

Clemson finished the game with nine hits, led by Wright and Jack Crighton with two each, while Manhattan tallied five hits in the contest.
