CLEMSON — Third-ranked Clemson scored multiple runs in four different innings and handed No. 7 Florida State their first loss of the season with a 15-5 run-rule win on Saturday afternoon in game one of a doubleheader at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. The Tigers, who took a 1-0 lead in the series, move to 20-2 (3-1 ACC) on the season while the Seminoles fall to 19-1 (3-1 ACC).
Florida State jumped out to a quick lead in the top of the first. The first three batters of the game reached and the cleanup hitter hit a grand slam for an early 4-0 lead.
Clemson put together a threat in the first as they loaded the bases with two outs. Will Taylor scored Alden Mathes on a RBI single, but Blake Wright was thrown out at the plate to end the inning and make the score 4-1.
The Tigers tied the game in the second inning. Andrew Ciufo and Jarren Purify hit consecutive one-out singles to set up a Cam Cannarella three-run homer and even it up at 4-4.
Clemson took their first lead of the game in the third inning. Taylor drew a one-out walk and went to third on a Jacob Hinderleider single. Ciufo beat out a double play that allowed Taylor to score and eventually came around to score himself on a RBI single by Cannarella for a 6-4 lead.
After the Seminoles cut it to 6-5 on a solo homer in the top of the fifth, the Tigers answered in a big way in the bottom of the inning. Taylor worked a leadoff walk and Hinderleider hit a no doubt two-run homer to stretch the lead to 8-5. Cannarella and Mathes later followed with two-out singles to set up a three-run homer by Blake Wright for an 11-5 advantage.
Alden Mathes drove in Purify and Cannarella in the seventh to stretch the lead to 13-5. Nolan Nawrocki and Will Taylor followed with RBI singles for the final 15-5 score.
Clemson starter Ethan Darden (4-0) earned the win after tossing a career-high 6.1 innings and allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts. Florida State starter Cam Leiter (4-1) suffered the loss after allowing six runs on six hits with five walks and three strikeouts in 2.2 innings.
The Tigers finished the game with 14 hits, led by Cannarella and Mathes with three each, while the Seminoles tallied seven hits in the contest.
Clemson and Florida State play game two of the series later this afternoon at 4:45 p.m. before wrapping up the weekend with a 1:00 p.m. Sunday finale.
