Clemson Defeats Florida State With 8 Run 9th

CLEMSON — Third-ranked Clemson scored eight runs in the ninth inning to come back and beat No. 7 Florida State 9-8 on Saturday afternoon in game two of a doubleheader at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. The Tigers, who lead the weekend series 2-0, improved to 21-2 (4-1 ACC) while the Seminoles fall to 19-2 (3-2 ACC).

Clemson scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first. Cam Cannarella and Nolan Nawrocki started the game with by both drawing walks before Alden Mathes drove a ball into right field to score Cannarella for a 1-0 lead.

Florida State tied the game with a solo homer in the second before taking a 3-1 lead in the third with two solo homers.

The Seminoles doubled their lead to 5-1 in the fourth on a two-run homer and put the game away with a three-run homer in the seventh for an 8-1 lead.

The Tigers answered in a big way in the ninth. Jimmy Obertop was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Will Taylor drew a walk to set up a three-run homer for Jacob Hinderleider to cut the lead to 8-4. Jacob Jarrell followed with a double that the outfielder lost in the sky before Cannarella walked and Nawrocki singled to load the bases. Blake Wright took the first pitch he saw over the wall for a grand slam to tie the game at 8-8. Obertop was again hit by a pitch and Taylor walked to set up Hinderleider for the walk-off single and an improbable 9-8 win.

Clemson reliever Jacob McGovern (1-0) earned the win with 2.0 scoreless innings of one-hit ball. Florida State reliever Carson Dorsey (2-1) suffered the loss after allowing three runs on two hits and two walks in 0.1 innings.

The Tigers finished the game with eight hits, led by Hinderleider with three, while the Seminoles tallied 10 hits in the contest.

Clemson and Florida State wrap up the three-game weekend series on Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
