Bad news for the Georgia football program, which opens the upcoming season with a neutral-site showdown against Clemson.
Bulldogs running back Trevor Etienne, the younger brother of former Clemson and current Jaguars running back Travis Etienne, is facing a possible ban.
According to ESPN, Trevor could receive a suspension following his arrest over the weekend for DUI, reckless driving and two other misdemeanors. The rising junior was traveling 80-90 mph in a 50-mph zone.
From ESPN’s Chris Low:
Georgia running back Trevor Etienne faces disciplinary action from both the university and athletic department following his DUI arrest over the weekend, coach Kirby Smart said Tuesday.
Under Georgia athletic department policy, Etienne would miss 10% of Georgia’s season — which equates to at least one game under the Bulldogs’ 12-game schedule — if found guilty of DUI.
Etienne was in line to be the Bulldogs’ starting running back in 2024 after transferring to UGA from Florida, where he rushed for 753 yards and eight touchdowns last season while averaging 5.7 yards per carry.
UGA head coach Kirby Smart commented Tuesday on the situation with Etienne.
“As we also know, sometimes kids don’t make the best decisions,” Smart said. “The older you get, sometimes the tougher the consequences are for your mistakes. So, he’s not going to let this mistake define him. He’s embarrassed. He’s upset. He knows he made a mistake. It’s a teaching moment, and we hope he gets better from it.”
Georgia and Clemson are set to open the 2024 season on Saturday, Aug. 31 in Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
