Brownell: ‘Clemson Is More Than Just a Football School’

In his 14th season at Clemson, Brad Brownell has the Tigers one win away from their first Final Four appearance in program history.

Clemson’s all-time winningest men’s basketball head coach, Brownell joined Michael Eaves on SportsCenter following the sixth-seeded Tigers’ 77-72 win over No. 2 Arizona on Thursday in the Sweet 16.

Clemson (24-11) advanced to the Elite Eight for the first time since 1980 and will face No. 4 Alabama (24-11) on Saturday at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles (8:49 p.m., TBS).

On SportsCenter, Brownell spoke about what the win over Arizona says about his team and what has keyed Clemson’s resurgence in March Madness after dropping three of four games entering the NCAA Tournament.

Brownell also discussed what making the Elite Eight for just the second time in school history, and the first time in 44 years, means for his program right now.

“It means a lot. It certainly means that Clemson is more than just a football school. We’ve got a lot of sports at our university that are having success, and Clemson basketball’s one of them,” said Brownell, whose team has led for 112:45 of 120 minutes played in the tournament so far in the wins over New Mexico, Baylor and Arizona.

“We went to a Sweet 16 about seven years ago, and now we’re in an Elite Eight. Certainly my goal and dream, and I’ve talked about it. I told our team early in the year that I thought we were talented enough to make the Final Four. You just have to have really good players that get along and play really well and play really hard together. This group does that. Certainly this is a special time for us and our fan base, and we’re hoping to build on it here in the next one.”
