Clemson Trio on Which Tigers They’re Most Excited to See in ‘24

Former Clemson offensive lineman Jordan McFadden and former Tiger defensive end Justin Mascoll, along with current Clemson redshirt senior defensive tackle Tre Williams, joined the latest episode of Clemson Football’s official podcast, “2 Right Turns.”

The two defensive guys and one offensive guy were each asked to name one player, on the opposite side of the ball, who they’re most looking forward to seeing for the Tigers next season.

Williams went first and named redshirt freshman running back Jay Haynes.

In limited opportunities during his first year at Clemson in 2023, when he dealt with nagging injuries and redshirted, Haynes rushed six times for 35 yards and scored a touchdown. The Alabama native also caught two passes for 20 yards and another touchdown.

“I’m really excited to see, I’m not gonna lie, Jay Haynes,” Williams said. “Two-six, shout out two-six, man. He’s coming into a new role. He was a young guy last year who I saw put in the work… I think he’s going to be that guy in the future for the Tigers, for sure.”

Mascoll named another running back — the Tigers’ punishing starter at the position, Phil Mafah, who’s entering his senior season in 2024.

Mafah heads into the upcoming campaign with 345 career carries for 1,772 yards and 20 touchdowns, as well as 37 career receptions for 206 yards, across 36 games (seven starts) from 2021-23. Last season, he recorded career highs in rushing attempts (179), rushing yards (965), rushing touchdowns (13), receptions (21) and receiving yards (108) over 13 games (five starts).

The former four-star Peach State prospect shined with a stellar performance in Clemson’s come-from-behind Gator Bowl victory over Kentucky, recording a Clemson bowl record four rushing touchdowns, including three fourth-quarter scores.

“I’m ready to see Phil Mafah,” Mascoll said. “Phil Mafah looks like he’s going to be explosive this year… I feel like he’s going to have a big year this year, for sure.”

As for McFadden, he said redshirt senior defensive tackle DeMonte Capehart is the player he’s excited to watch this year.

Capehart came on down the stretch last season as one of Clemson’s most physical and disruptive interior linemen. The 6-foot-5, 320-pounder was credited by the coaching staff with nine quarterback pressures, the second-most among the Tigers’ interior linemen, and was credited with 16 tackles (5.0 for loss), a sack, a pass breakup and a forced fumble.

A former top-50 national recruit, the Hartsville, S.C., native has recorded 32 tackles (9.0 for loss), 2.0 sacks, a pass breakup and a forced fumble during his 34 career games.

“I’m gonna say Demonte Capehart. (Capehart is) looking like he’s ready to play some football,” said McFadden, who’s entering his second NFL season after being taken by the Los Angeles Chargers in the fifth round (156th overall) of the 2023 NFL Draft.

“I’ve seen what he was able to do last year, and if I’m being honest, I don’t think there’s going to be too many people out there that’s going to be able to mess with him. So, I’m excited to watch that.”
