Shipley Pegged as ‘Red Star’ Draft Prospect by NFL Analyst

NFL.com analyst Bucky Brooks dove into the 2024 NFL Draft class, breaking down who he views as All-Pro and Pro Bowl-caliber prospects, along with five he sees as overachievers.

Brooks named former Clemson running back Will Shipley among those overachievers – also known as “red star” prospects, as Brooks explained:

On the “Move the Sticks” podcast, Daniel Jeremiah and I have previously discussed how scouts will stand on the table for guys they believe will outperform their draft status. In the scouting world, these players are called “red star” guys because they are destined to make their mark in the league despite circumstances.

Here’s what Brooks – a former NFL player and scout – had to say about the dynamic and versatile, 5-foot-11, 206-pound Shipley:

Every offensive coordinator in the league is looking for a multi-purpose back with big-play capability as a runner and receiver. Shipley is a slippery scat back with exceptional vision, balance and burst. As a designated playmaker out of the backfield with home-run potential, he could carve out an excellent role as a change-of-pace option in the rotation.

Brooks recently released his final top five prospects by position rankings ahead of next week’s draft, and he ranked Shipley as the No. 5 running back in this year’s draft class:

Shipley has flown under the radar for much of the pre-draft process, but evaluators envision the Clemson standout flourishing as a change-of-pace weapon in the NFL. With outstanding stop-start quickness and a versatile game, the slippery playmaker could carve out an impactful role as a rotational player in a committee backfield.

Shipley concluded his prolific Clemson career (2021-23) in the top 10 in school history in total touchdowns (33), rushing touchdowns (31), 100-yard rushing games (10), all-purpose yards (4,253) and kickoff return yards (904). He also finished ranked 11th in rushing yards (2,747).

In 2023, Shipley became the ninth player in school history to score 30 career touchdowns and the eighth player at Clemson ever to rush for 30 touchdowns. He finished last season with 827 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns on 167 carries to go with 31 catches for 244 yards and two receiving scores in 12 games.

The 2024 NFL Draft will take place in Detroit from April 25-27.
